Gyprocker in Sydney — New Walls & Ceilings

Gyprock is plasterboard. It is a brand — CSR's — that became the generic word for it in Australia the way Esky did for a cooler. A sheet of gypsum plaster pressed between two layers of paper liner, fixed to timber or steel framing, then joined and set to give you a flat wall. If one quote says plasterboard and another says gyprock, they are quoting the same product.

Plasterboard is the sheet. Plaster is the wet compound. Modern Australian walls are plasterboard sheets with plaster compound used only at the joins, corners and screw holes — not skimmed across the whole surface the way older solid-plaster walls were. It is why a modern wall goes up in a day and a heritage one takes a week.

The trade of installing it: setting out where the sheets land, fixing them to the frame, taping and setting the joins, then sanding it flat enough that your painter starts on a finished surface instead of fixing ours. The word covers the whole job, not just the sheeting — which is why "we have had it gyprocked" and "we have had the sheets put up" are not the same thing when you are reading a quote.

Level 4 is the standard finish for most rooms: joins, corners and screw holes set and sanded, ready for flat paint. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat across the entire surface. You want Level 5 under gloss or semi-gloss, on a feature wall, or anywhere a window throws light along the wall — raking light finds every join that flat paint would have hidden. It costs more because it is another coat and another sand, and on the wrong wall it is money you did not need to spend. We will tell you which one your job actually needs.

It depends on the area, the ceiling height, access, the condition of the framing and the board type required. Anyone quoting a firm price without seeing the job is guessing. Send through the room sizes and some photos and we will give you a written quote based on the actual work.

A single room is usually one to two days of sheeting and setting, plus drying time between coats. A full renovation or new build runs longer and gets scheduled around the other trades. We confirm timing once we have seen the scope.

Sometimes. We check the flatness, the fixing surface and whether there is any moisture behind it first. In a lot of rooms, stripping the old lining gives a stronger and much flatter result, and we will tell you honestly which way makes sense.
